Binwalk vs Unblob: Inspect or Extract Firmware?

Binwalk and Unblob both help examine composite firmware files, but the useful choice depends on the immediate question and supported format. Binwalk is well suited to identifying embedded regions and signatures, while Unblob emphasizes recursive extraction into an analyzable file tree. Neither result alone proves complete recovery, valid partitions or executable runtime behavior.

Start with the question

Use region inspection when you need offsets and candidate embedded formats before changing the workspace. Use extraction when the next task needs actual child files and the relevant handlers and external extractors are available. Preserve the original image and tool report in both cases.

Check coverage and gaps

Compare hashes, ranges, warnings, skipped regions and missing dependencies. Recursive output can mix containers, decompressed files and metadata with different relationships to the original bytes. A clean command exit is not evidence that encrypted or unsupported content was understood.
