Signoz Writing Clickhouse Queries

Write a SigNoz dashboard query using the correct log or trace schema and panel output shape.

Editorial review checked 2026-10-31 against this instruction snapshot. Supporting scripts and runtime behavior remain outside this editorial review.

What it does

The entry routes log and trace requests to different companion references. It distinguishes their timestamp representations, resource tables and dashboard placeholders, then relates the projection to a time-series, value or table panel. It also highlights distributed-query and grouping mistakes that can produce failures or misleading results.

Best for

Observability engineers building a dashboard panel that requires raw ClickHouse SQL rather than the visual query builder.

Tradeoffs and requirements

This is panel-oriented guidance, not a generic database exploration skill. The actual deployed SigNoz schema and the detailed references still need checking. A syntactically valid query can select the wrong signal, time unit or resource dimension, and its execution can consume substantial cluster resources.

Supporting-file static inspection

Bounded source inspection, not a runtime security audit. This inspection does not execute code.

0 text files inspected at this exact repository snapshot. 2 files outside the inspection budget or type allowlist. Dependencies were not installed or independently audited.

Absence of a pattern is not proof of safety. Permission needs and runtime behavior remain Unknown.

      Suggested workflow

Identify the signal and panel type, inspect the matching schema reference and bound both the time range and any distributed subquery. Map dashboard variables to the correct timestamp type before introducing custom joins or derived fields.

      How to judge the result

Check output columns, units, time buckets, grouping and empty-window behavior in the target panel. Compare representative values with a trusted view and inspect the query plan or resource use before widening the time range. Attribution settings do not prove the query answers the intended question.
