YARA applies pattern rules to files or other data in defensive analysis. Choose it when you can describe observable features of a family or sample set and want reproducible matches. Test rules against positive and negative examples, then review every hit. A match supports a classification hypothesis; it does not prove intent, safety or a complete malware family identity.
Write a testable rule
Anchor conditions in features you can explain and document where they came from. Keep sample hashes and rule versions so results can be reproduced.
Limits
Broad strings can create false positives, while packed or changed binaries can evade a rule. Treat downloaded rule collections as untrusted code or data for review before operational use.
