Volatility 3 examines memory images for forensic questions about processes, modules and system state. Use it when you have an authorized capture and a specific question about what was present in that snapshot. Preserve acquisition details and image integrity. A memory image is incomplete by nature, and a plugin result should be traced back to the structures it interpreted.
Start with provenance
Record how and when the memory image was acquired, its hash and the operating system context. Choose a plugin matching the question and retain its parameters and output.
Limits
The absence of an artifact in one capture is not proof it never existed. Acquisition gaps, encryption and corrupted memory can limit a conclusion. Check the project's own license terms rather than assuming a common SPDX identifier.
