Responsible Software Analysis

A useful reverse-engineering project begins with permission and a legitimate purpose: understanding software you own, authorized testing, interoperability, education, security research or preservation. Legal rules depend on location, license and circumstances, so check the rules relevant to your target. Keep the investigation bounded, preserve evidence and avoid publishing secrets or instructions that enable harm.

Set the scope

Record who authorized the work, which systems and versions are in scope, and the question to answer. Public availability of a binary does not by itself settle rights to redistribute code or bypass protections. Rules vary by jurisdiction and agreement; this page is not legal advice.

Publish with care

Write findings in your own words, attribute sources and avoid republishing proprietary code, private data or full third-party case narratives. For malware research, focus on defensive understanding and use an isolated lab. A dual-use tool should be described through its legitimate analysis purpose.
