Durable Objects

What it does

This source covers designing and reviewing Durable Object classes together with their bindings, storage and migration configuration. Its focus is coordination around a particular object identity. It connects application behavior with the operational details that a stateless request-handler example would leave out.

Best for

A chat room, collaborative session, booking boundary or other application that needs requests to share persistent per-entity state. Define the entity key and consistency requirement before choosing object boundaries or deciding how work should be distributed.

Tradeoffs and requirements

A coordinated object can become a bottleneck if unrelated workloads share the same identity. Storage migrations, alarms and reconnecting clients create failure cases that a single local request does not exercise. Cloudflare services can incur charges; source examples do not establish the cost or permissions of the user's deployment.
