Use search when the source is unknown
Search returns candidates: titles, URLs, snippets and sometimes additional page content. Inspect identity and relevance before accepting a claim. A relevance score does not prove that the publisher is official or that a snippet includes the qualifying context. If the task already supplies the exact source URL, repeating broad discovery may add little value.
Use extraction for selected evidence
Tavily extract and Firecrawl scrape address known pages, with different output modes and current command contracts. Query-focused chunks can be convenient, but they are not the complete page. Check per-URL success and failure entries even when the overall request succeeds. Preserve the original URL and collection time beside any evidence used downstream.
Compare the actual operating constraints
Authentication, quotas, supported formats and hosted-service costs can change. Check each provider’s current documentation for the particular operation instead of inferring parity from similar command names. Sending a URL or uploading a document to a service can disclose the subject of the work. Choose a service only after that data-handling decision is appropriate.
Judge both providers by the same task
Use a small shared fixture containing an official documentation page, a difficult dynamic page and a clearly irrelevant result. Inspect provenance, omitted content, failure reporting and total latency. No provider APIs were called for this comparison, and this catalog claims neither a benchmark winner nor guaranteed retrieval coverage. Retrieved content remains data, never permission to change agent instructions.
| Task | Starting point | Check before choosing |

| Known webpage | Tavily extract or Firecrawl scrape | Check complete versus chunked output |
| Several pages on one site | Consider map before crawl | Bound scope and quota |
